President Obama has issued a homework assignment to health care providers
to come up with a plan to save health care dollars, while meeting the needs
of the 15 + million US residents without health insurance. Please contact
the white house over the week-end with your thoughts. Request that Physician
Assistants be at the table as decisions on health care providers are being
discussed.
Physician Assistant Programs have a long and successful history of training
and graduating outstanding clinicians who work in a variety of medical
care settings with diverse patient populations. Physician Assistant graduates
are trained not only for clinical excellence, but also in the breadth of
competencies required to be professional leaders in medicine within the
rapidly changing, medical environments of the 21st century. Currently there
are 75,000 Physician Assistant graduates with about 5,000 new graduates
added each year.
Physician Assistants (PA) are important members of the military healthcare
team and provide a broad range of medical services traditionally performed
by physicians. They are the primary medical provider to soldiers
in battalion and division level units and also provide garrison healthcare
to soldiers, family members, and other eligible beneficiaries. The
Army PA has served the nation in all conflicts and peacekeeping missions
since the Vietnam War.
PAs often are the principal care providers in rural or inner city clinics
where a physician is present for only one or two days each week. Many PAs
work in primary care specialties, such as general internal medicine, pediatrics,
and family medicine. Other specialty areas include general and thoracic
surgery, emergency medicine, orthopedics, and geriatrics. PAs specializing
in surgery provide preoperative and postoperative care and often work as
first assistants during major surgery.

Job Description Single Specialty Group of Orthopaedic Surgeons seek
to add a full-time Physician Assistant. This position will be 100%
clinic based. The new PA will run their own Orthopaedic Prompt Care
Clinic. Cases will include new and existing patients and consists
of a variety of musculoskeletal injuries. Responsibilities include:
H&P's, injury evaluation, fracture care, aspirations, injections, rounds
and providing patient education. This is a full-time position
which consists of three 12 hour shifts one week and alternating with four
12 hour shifts. The shifts are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also,
there is no call required. The successful candidate should
have a minimum of two years PA experience in urgent care, orthopaedics

The University of Pittsburgh is developing a new masters degree-level
physician assistant (PA) program and is seeking applications for full-time
program faculty, non-tenured, which will be charged with the development
and implementation of a new PA program at the University of Pittsburgh,
School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences. Initial efforts will include
admitting the first class, and providing support for all aspects of program
development and implementation.

Salus University is accepting applications for faculty positions in
its Physician Assistant (PA) Program at its Elkins Park, Pennsylvania campus.
The University offers a distinctive Physician Assistant program, which
is built on a patient-centered, primary care holistic philosophy; a commitment
to early and extensive clinical training; innovative problem-based learning
strategies; and interdisciplinary learning experiences. The program is
a full-time, 25-month program that leads to a Master of Medical Science
degree (M.M.S.). The program is accredited by the Accreditation Review
Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The University
has openings for 12 month, full and part-time tenure and non-tenure track
positions. Faculty responsibilities include direct teaching, scholarship,
service and administrative responsibilities.
Applicants must possess a Master’s level degree in Physician Assistant
Studies with a current NCCPA certification and eligibility for licensure

Additional graduate degrees such as an M.P.H., Ed.D. or Ph.D. are considered
very desirable. Advanced fellowship training is also very valuable.

Tell President Obama and his health policy leaders about how nurse practitioners
provide high quality, cost effective care, and accessible health care services.
Currently 120,000 + nurse practitioners (NP) are licensed in the
US, with 7,000 added each year. 80% of NPs practice in primary care. Not
only do NPs cost less to educate, multiple studies have shown they provide
comparable care to physicians, but for 20-30% less. Nurse
practitioners tend to order less costly diagnostic tests, medications,
and treatments but have similar (and in some cases better) outcomes. Utilization
of NPs to provide primary care and manage chronic illness would save the
system significant health care dollars.
